IICD
International Institute for Communication and Development
IICD is an independent non-profit foundation, established by the Netherlands Minister for Development Cooperation in 1997. Its sources of core funding are the Dutch Directorate-General for Development Cooperation (DGIS), the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC).
The International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD) assists developing countries to realise locally owned sustainable development by harnessing the potential of information and communication technologies (ICTs). IICD works with its partner organisations in selected countries, helping local stakeholders to assess the potential uses of ICTs in development.
"Our philosophy is that ICTs are tools that can contribute to sustainable development and poverty alleviation. However, this only applies when ICTs are supporting existing development activities. Therefore, we focus on ’traditional’ development sectors, such as education, governance, health, livelihood opportunities (especially agriculture) and environment.
"Currently, we are active in nine countries : Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Ecuador, Ghana, Jamaica, Mali, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia."
